In Solidarity with......
This is the image of the now so-famous DU girl who has caught all attention, attracted tweets from all corners, for taking a stance that was diametrically opposite to the so-called nationalists.
Well I'll not go on the Left vs Right Debate,I'll not comment on whether its the left that has gone far too anti-national in its intellects,or all this is the culmination of the state power that has gradually shifted to one side over the last couple of years, all I have to say is that perhaps we need to learn to respect views that are contradictory to ours, atleast in the universities, for if questions will not be asked in universities ,where will they be?????
Last year when it all happened in JNU,I,like all nationalists, condemned the anti-national slogans.and NOT to mistake that all this while I have changed parties(of which I was never a part),anti-national slogans should always be condemned, without any ifs and buts.
But the uproar that has followed this message in the placard,is in my opinion, completely illogical, for many sound reasons:-
First of all, there should be space as well as respect for different ideologues, views, opinions and dissents.I may not agree with you on a certain issue, but that doesn't empower me with the authority to rape threat you,or other unacceptable things.More disappointing is that from former cricketer to parliamentarian, tweets have come ridiculing this girl, but not many question(rather condemn)the violent assaults on the freedom of speech and expression. Is this a fashion to be patriotic. No its just to appear like that: From nationalist slogans to tweets to whatsapp DPs,and other diverse forms.
Secondly, the so-called nationalists and patriots who are calling this message as anti-national,my answer to them is that their nationalism is quite narrow, and if that is the ideal Nationalism,I'll be very proud to be proclaimed as an anti-national.The message 'Pakistan did not kill my dad,War killed him' ,in my opinion(which may be different from yours)expresses the harsh reality we often overlook amidst floods of jingoistic rhetoric.Apart from that,it is a very beautiful message at the very right time: At a time when racialism,"Trumpistic" xenophobia and the so-called nationalism is on a high,in all parts of the world,it is a proud moment for us that a 20 Year old girl from India, has come up with a message against the very logic of War,a message which is in itself a harbinger of world peace,a message which questions not the puppets, but those who're ceaselessly engaged in war mongering.
But unfortunately,in the Tsunami of nationalism and patriotism, most of us have lost it,and it is amidst such a chaotic state of jingoism that all that's sane, seems anti-national.
In the end,I'm bound to issue a disclaimer that Iam in no way, associated to a particular ideology, have no intention to support one in the battle of left and right, and I also know that all this could be a mere publicity stunt,or a Kanhaiya Kumar 2.0,something for the upcoming DUSU elections,or other long term political ambitions....Therefore Iam not in support of anybody, nor any organisation,it's only the beautuful message in the placard that I have solidarity with!!!!!
